The PADI Underwater Navigator course improves your observation techniques and teaches you to use the compass more accurately underwater. If you like challenges with great rewards, do this course and have fun finding your way.
If you are a PADI Open Water Diver who is at least 16 years old, you can sign up for the PADI Underwater Navigator Specialty course.
Underwater Navigator Specialty
You will learn the tools of the trade, including navigation using natural references and following compass directions. During three dives, you will practice:
- Methods for estimating distances underwater .
- Compass navigation making at least five turns.
- Mark or relocate a submerged object or a position from the surface.
- Making underwater maps .
- 3 dives.

You can get academic credit for the Underwater Navigation course, ask your instructor.
In addition, the first dive of this PADI Specialty Diver course can serve as an Adventure Dive credit for your Advanced Open Water Diver certification ask your instructor how to get the credit.
Equipment needed to orient underwater
In addition to your basic diving equipment, you will need a compass and an underwater whiteboard. Your PADI Instructor or dive center staff can recommend other equipment to help you stay oriented, such as marking buoys or capes and reels.
Begin the Orientation Course underwater
Visit our dive center to sign up for the course and pick up a PADI Underwater Navigator Crew-Pak which includes your manual and video. You can also register online and we will send it to your home. By studying before class, you will be better prepared to start practicing your navigation techniques when you meet with your PADI Instructor.
